Activities to Calm

Deep pressure 

An infant's sensory system is immature and calms to the deep, even and firm pressure of being held and swaddling. Similarly, an individual's system that is under significant stress or is immature in the way it is processing sensory input will also respond well and calm to these deep pressure receptors.

This technique is often used successfully with individuals that are easily distracted, hyperactive or lacking concentration.

These individuals respond positively to the additional weight some products provide. Depending on individual preference, some people prefer "tightness" such as bike shorts and LYCRA®-based wraps or compression clothing.

Others prefer the "heaviness" of  weighted products. 

We have several options to try in therapy sessions and will help you find the appropriate products and accommodations for your child's sensory needs.

Pay attention to what your child is telling you about their sensory needs. Children that crave deep hugs, leaning onto people and things, and  love to rough house play need this more of this input.

Children that have poor trunk control and low muscle tone need weight to feel more stable and it helps to increase their muscle tone and posture.

Some ideas that help these children:

*Weighted vests, blankets, lap pads, shoulder wraps

*deep hugs, massage, and squeezes throughout their day

*vibration options- neck massagers, lumbar vibration pads, massage mats

*therapuetic deep pressure
